Which is Better; a skid steer with tracks or wheels?
Hello, I have been using a tractor with a front end loader and box grader for my landscaping jobs and have done rather well with it.
To make a long story short, the tractor is in for repairs and I have to rent a skid steer for only the third time.
If anyone has any experience with skidsteers I would like to know which is better for grading a property for laying sod.
It’s going to be a bit of work as I have to reverse the grade of the entire property as it now slopes toward the home instead of away.
I am just curious to see if there are any opinions as to which one people prefer or if there is an advantage to either.

Tracks are needed for deep mud and snow.Fine grading should be done dry,therefore a ‘normal ‘skidder would be fine.Unless you mean the bobcat with permanent rubber tracks,which is fine for all work.I like a bobcat with removable steel tracks,good for all seasons,but hard on concrete and asphalt.
Cat makes an awsome rubber track machine.You will be much better off with the soilid rubber track machine for gradingfinsh grading.The track machine has a much more stable base and doesn’t bounce around like a rubber tired machine or even a rubber tire with steel tracks machine.Also the rubber track machine has a lower psi on the ground which means less chance of busting piping below the ground,If a situation comes where you have to cross a sidewalk it is better for that.Trust me I do Inground pools, and do all the finish grading myself.I use a cat with rubber tracks and a harley rake and it leaves it smooth as glass!!! I have always found the rubber-tracked version to be best when grading an area for sod, seed, etc. because it has less tendency to leave deep ruts. The weight of the machine is spread over the entire track area instead of being concentrated in only 4 little places. The tires also tend to dig in and spin more than the tracks. By using rubber tracks you can, if necessary, get onto concrete or pavement without causing significant amounts of damage to the surface. It also has less likelihood of tearing up existing vegetation that may be kept, unless you do a lot of “neutral-steer” turning (locking one track while using the other to turn or using one in forward and the other in reverse).
